Turkey hunters break record in Iowa

CHARITON, Iowa - Hunters broke Iowa's record for turkey hunting during the spring season this year.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says hunters nabbed more than 14,600 turkeys, crushing the old record of just over 12,000 set in 2016.

Iowa DNR Forest Wildlife and Research Biologist Jim Coffey told KXCV/KRNW that the DNR set a goal of collecting 500 turkey legs from state hunters to test for the LPDV.

Researchers believe it may be playing a part in the nationwide decline of turkey populations. Coffey encourages hunters who might still have a lower turkey leg to participate in the study.

Those hunters can request a survey packet at iowadnr.gov/turkey.
